Life Cycle Assessment is a thorough methodology for assessing the environmental impacts arising from the entire life cycle of a product, process, or an organization as a whole. Botta Packaging decided to invest to provide a basic LCA assessment tool which can be of help when selecting possible packaging materials. It is offered free of charge with the aim of increasing LCA culture and knowledge as well as enabling accessibility to a simplified LCA tool to all businesses alike, prior to undertaking the further step of evaluating a complete LCA study.

The analysis was done on OpenLCA, an open-source software for Sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment (you can visit the website www.openlca.org.). The Environmental Footprint* (EF) database which is designed to support the use of Product Environmental Footprints (PEF) category rules and organization environmental footprint sector rules, was used. The LCA analysis was done using the Environmental Footprint (Mid-point Indicator) impact assessment method.
The data for LCA analysis was obtained from a database of life cycle inventory (LCI) data for corrugated base papers and corrugated products issued by FEFCO (European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers) and CCB (Cepi Container Board) – 9th edition. The report from FEFCO provides the environmental data for the production of corrugated board products based on the data supplied by its members.
The link to FEFCO’s European Database for Corrugated Board Life Cycle Studies is available here.
The LCA analysis was repeated for Low Density Polyethylene Bag, High Density Polyethylene Can and Polypropylene Bag using EF database. The processes for production of Low Density Polyethylene Bag, High Density Polyethylene Can and Polypropylene Bag were selected from the EF database and the analysis was done for 1 tonne of each product. The impact assessment method adopted is the same as that used for Corrugated board, i.e., Environmental Footprint (Mid-point Indicator) impact assessment method, without any allocation method.

*Within the Environmental Footprint dataset, the results for water use might be overestimated and shall therefore be interpreted with caution. This problem has nothing to do with the impact assessment method or the implementability of EF methods, but occurred during the technical development of some datasets. All results remain valid and usable. The Environmental Footprint datasets will be updated in 2019 (which will automatically adjust the regionalized water flows). The LCA model used is quite basic as it takes into consideration many assumptions. This has been done to compensate for the lack of available datasets without compromising on the general reliability of the obtained results. Here, the system boundaries are defined by the cradle-to-gate approach. So, all inputs and outputs outside the purview of the system boundaries have been completely neglected, even though they contribute to environmental impact in the real-world scenario. As such, the evaluated values of impact parameters obtained through OpenLCA simulation are supposedly lower than the actual value
