On 8th March 2022 our VP Lara Botta was a guest on SkyTG 24, to highlight the role of women in the corporate world. As well as holding an apex role for BOTTA EcoPackaging, a Milan-based company specialising in sustainable packaging, Lara Botta also plays an important role in supporting projects aimed at female empowerment and gender equality, including the STEAMiamoci project. This project aims at bringing women closer to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) areas, so that there can be recorded an increase in the percentage of women working in the scientific-technological sector, which is now and increasingly is growing three times faster than other sectors. Unfortunately, it is a notable fact that the presence of women in these areas is much lower than the presence of men, often due to a cultural heritage.
Analysing this phenomenon more analytically, the idea that the choice for women to undertake a scientific-technological study path is a more tortuous one is closely linked to a gender stereotype. BOTTA EcoPackaging in the person of Lara Botta works to combat this stereotype and seeks to make its own contribution to changing the cultural heritage, that in the Italian context is deeply rooted: according to Doxa studies, it appears that millenials are greatly influenced by their parents in the choice of the study path, an influence that is however built on personal bases and linked to their generation, and that is therefore not very up-to-date compared to the current needs of the labour market. Our VP points out that changing gender equality in companies is an important goal to achieve, because the work carried out by a mixed and diverse group makes it possible to curb and avoid possible failures; she cites some striking examples from recent years of some companies. One example is the limitation of the case of voice recognition: a project that was mainly carried out by men and that at the time was calibrated only on male voices and therefore not able to recognise female voices -the main target of its use and invention.
The enhancement of the female role in the corporate context was also emphasised by the contribution of Stefano Venturi, President of Cefriel and former CEO of HP, who reflected on the importance of a diverse and mixed group. The female component in company teams allows the company to better achieve its objectives because the mixed group is the mirror of today’s society, a mixed society, made up of men as well as women: it is the mix of men and women, and their skills and personalities, that has enabled human progress and it can therefore best fulfil the company’s objectives.
