Packaging alternatives to plastic: What are they?

Plastic is such a common part of our daily lives that we hardly pay it any attention.

Awareness in recent years, which has increased due to increasingly frequent natural disasters, leads to questions about plastic pollution and the entire industry that focuses on this material.

Studies on the critical issues related to plastic are endless: from microplastics found even on the deepest seabed, to the floating islands on the surface of the Pacific Ocean, everything seems to underline the need to find alternatives that are sustainable for the planet we inhabit.

Fortunately, interest in alternative packaging to plastic has grown significantly, leading to the discovery of innovative solutions that can help reduce plastic pollution and promote a more sustainable lifestyle. In this informative text, we will explore some of the most promising alternatives to plastic packaging currently available.

Let’s compare paper packaging alternatives to plastic

BOTTA EcoPackaging firmly believes in continuous innovation in order to meet the new demands and new sensitivities of its customers.

Alternative packaging to plastic is part of this.

BOTTA EcoPackaging is proud to be a benchmark for sustainable packaging, which is why we have decided to make further progress.

Biodegradable materials

A popular option to replace conventional plastic is biodegradable packaging. These materials are made using renewable resources such as corn starch, cellulose, or biopolymers. Biodegradable packaging decomposes more quickly than regular plastic, thus reducing environmental impact.

Compostable packaging

Compostable packaging is designed to naturally dissolve into the environment without leaving harmful residues. This packaging is made from organic materials such as cardboard, bamboo or sugar cane. They can be composted together with food waste, reducing the amount of waste going to landfills.

Reusable packaging

A highly effective solution to reduce plastic use is to promote the use of reusable packaging. Reusable bottles, containers and bags can effectively replace single-use packaging. In addition, the use of reusable containers can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated.

Paper-based packaging

This is where we come in.
Paper is an easily recyclable material. Paper-based packaging, such as boxes or bags, offers an environmentally friendly (eco-friendly) alternative to plastic.

Many companies are already opting for such packaging, also using recycled materials or materials from responsibly managed forests.

The research and development of alternative packaging to plastic is offering promising solutions to the challenge of environmental pollution. From biodegradable materials to the use of renewable resources, many sustainable options are available to reduce the negative impact of packaging on nature.

Only through a collective effort can we preserve our planet for future generations.

BOTTA EcoPackaging, in turn, has obtained FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) certification and, as a certified company, makes certain eco-products with the FSC® label available upon request.

In addition, we have also obtained ATICELCA® certification for the recyclability of paper; for some of our eco-products, this reduces disposal costs and facilitates the process.

We are proud to be a member of Sedex (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange), which promotes ethical and responsible improvement of business practices in supply chains globally, and of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition® (SPC), as well as the Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPA) in order to make a concrete contribution to a sustainable future for the entire supply chain.

Because of our belief in shared innovation, we joined the Green Economy Network.

We signed the ‘Manifesto of Sustainability and Growth for Italian Enterprises’, promoted by the Young Entrepreneurs of Confindustria and Unilever Italia, responding promptly to call-to-action launched by the Ministry of the Environment.

We are also part of the CONAI National Consortium for the recovery of cellulose-based packaging. We believe in long-term sustainable development to ensure a healthy planet for future generations.
