BOTTA EcoPackaging’s VP, Lara Botta, Discusses EU Regulations and Sustainability Solutions in a Packaging Labelling Interview

In a recent interview with Packaging Labelling magazine, Lara Botta, BOTTA EcoPackaging‘s Vice President and Chief Innovation Manager, shared valuable insights on the evolving landscape of EU packaging and labelling regulations and how iQRcode™ can help brands operating in the EU.

EU Regulations on Environmental Labelling

The EU has made it clear that reducing waste produced from packaging is a top priority by setting an ambitious target to recycle 65% of all packaging waste by 2025. To achieve this, a new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) has been proposed to set ecodesign requirements for a wide range of products, enhancing their recycling processes. This regulation emphasizes consumer education and aims to improve the environmental impact of products.

Digital Product Passports Enhanced Transparency and Consumer Confidence

A key component of the ESPR is the introduction of Digital Product Passports (DPPs). The DPP is a digital tool that contains all relevant information about a product’s creation process and components, detailing which parts can be recycled and reused. This boosts the product’s circularity. Moreover, Digital Passports help consumers make purchasing choices by providing transparent data about the product’s life cycle and improving the overall awareness of the environmental impacts of these products.

Overcoming Compliance Challenges

“One of the biggest issues for companies that operate or export within the EU market is navigating the complex landscape of recycling labelling regulations” stated by Lara in the interview. Each country has its own requirements, forcing companies to adapt their packaging accordingly. For example, France requires the Triman pictogram, while Italy mandates specific recycling codes and disposal texts. This leads to increased production costs and logistical complications. Despite these challenges, the iQRcode™ solution offers an effective way to streamline compliance and reduce costs.

Introducing the iQRcode™ Solution

BOTTA EcoPackaging’s innovative iQRcode™ solution simplifies compliance with these diverse regulations. The iQRcode™ is automatically compliant with the EU regulations on environmental labelling and is available in over 80 languages, ensuring companies meet the diverse requirements of each EU country.

The 2D barcodes used in iQRcode™ provide clear recycling information through a single scan, saving valuable space on packaging.

Enhancing Brand Value with iQRcode™

According to Lara,  iQRcode™ also boosts brand visibility and consumer engagement. By offering a simple way for consumers to access comprehensive product information, brands can create a more interactive and engaging experience. This builds a strong connection between the brand and its customers, promoting loyalty and long-term relationships.

Additionally, the  iQRcode™ system generates valuable data on consumer interactions. Brands can analyze this data to gain insights into consumer preferences and behaviors, enabling them to tailor their marketing strategies and product offerings more effectively. By leveraging these insights, brands can stay ahead of market trends and better meet the demands of their environmentally conscious customers.

By leveraging tools like iQRcode™, companies can ensure compliance with the EU regulations, reduce costs, gain customers’ insights, and enhance their brand value while promoting sustainability. These solutions are invaluable for companies striving to navigate the evolving EU regulatory landscape.
